Rehabilitation - Day programs

The Rehabilitation Day Program at The Hills Private Hospital is designed to restore confidence, independence and mobility for people who have established rehabilitation needs, but do not require the support of an inpatient service. Our rehabilitation philosophy is to work in partnership with patients to restore their ability to function as efficiently as their condition will permit following injury, illness or accident. We provide a variety of different rehabilitation programs customised to suit individual needs.

These programs are designed to maximise strength, conditioning, mobility, fitness , self reliance and well being.

The Hills Private Hospital is fully accredited by the Australian Council of Health Care Standards (ACHS) and complies with world class hospital standards. We continually strive to improve the quality of care and services provided to patients

Suitability

Rehabilitation day programs are suitable if you have established rehabilitation needs, but do not need the support of inpatient medical or nursing care. You may have stayed with us as an inpatient or have been referred to one of our private specialists from your general practitioner, specialist or surgeon.

About the Cardiac Rehabilitation Day Program (Phase II – Heart Failure)

Cardiac rehabilitation at The Hills Private Hospital is designed to educate, recondition and improve functional confidence with increased endurance for patients following cardiac pathology or surgery. We offer a comprehensive rehabilitation service with a rehabilitation team that develops a tailored cardiac management plan tailored to your needs. The Cardiac Rehabilitation Program is designed for those who have experienced:

  • myocardial infarction (heart attack)
  • cardiac surgery (stent/CABG/valve replacements)
  • stable angina
  • controlled heart failure
  • other vascular/heart disease

The Program

Each patient is assessed individually, and a team of health professionals develop a rehabilitation plan according to the individual's particular needs. The Cardiac Rehabilitation Program is designed for people who can travel from their home to The Hills Private Hospital Day Program in Baulkham Hills one or more times per week to attend group therapy.

The program includes:

  • Exercise: Exercise physiologists with work with you to improve strength, function and mobility to enhance quality of life of individuals who have experienced a cardiac event.
  • Education: by our multi-disciplinary team who will educate you on heart disease and eating for heart health.
  • Tai Chi: sessions involve gentle breathing exercises, stretches, slow movements, balance and co-ordination training.

Each patient will have graded activity programs overtime – to progressively increase general strength and endurance.

Duration of the Program

The Cardiac Rehabilitation Day Program consist of two day sessions or one evening session that are two (2) hours in duration. The times available include:

  • Monday and Wednesday from 3 pm–5 pm
  • Wednesday and Friday 12 pm–2 pm
  • Tuesdays evenings from 6 pm–8 pm

  • Comfortable casual clothes that are suitable for exercise and closed shoes
  • You are encouraged to leave anything of value at home including jewellery, credit cards and cash as we are unable to accept responsibility for the loss of valuables or money

Access to Services

Access to the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program is available via referral. Your local GP, physician and/or surgeon will be able to assist you with obtaining a referral to a medical specialist who is accredited at the hospital and who can organise your admission.

Designed for patients who have experienced falls recently or in the past, or for those who are at high risk of falls.

This includes Occupational Therapy education on safety in the home and community, Exercise Physiology and Diversional Therapy.

This group is also appropriate for those who are less mobile as there is only a minor, low impact exercise component, and exercises can be completed whilst sitting.

Individual sessions may be available based on the needs of the participant and are set at the discretion of the Rehabilitation Physician.

These programs are designed for those who require additional assistance to gain the best outcomes from the therapeutic process.

Designed for patients lacking motivation or struggling to know where to begin on their journey to life-long health and well being.

This reconditioning based program includes:

  • Exercise Physiology
  • Hydrotherapy sessions
  • Tai Chi.

About the Orthopaedic Day Rehabilitation Program

The Hills Private Hospital Orthopaedic Day Rehabilitation Program is designed for patients who have undergone Joint or Spinal surgery. This program offers ongoing support to patients following inpatient rehabilitation or direct referral from the community. It is also appropriate for patients who have injuries or are experiencing weakness, stiffness or pain in the back, knee, hip, or shoulder.

The Orthopaedic Day Rehabilitation Program is designed for those who have experienced:

  • Hip and knee replacements
  • Spinal surgery
  • Shoulder surgery
  • Joint surgery

The Program

Each patient is assessed individually, and a team of health professionals develop a rehabilitation plan according to the individual's particular needs. The Orthopaedic Rehabilitation Program is designed for people who can travel from their home to The Hills Private Hospital Day Program in Baulkham Hills one or more times per week to attend group therapy.

The program includes:

  • Physiotherapy sessions involve improving joint movement, strengthening, stretching, mobility training, functional exercises and manual therapy as required
  • Exercise Physiology to support core stability, provide upper/lower body strengthening, cardiovascular fitness and balance exercises
  • Hydrotherapy sessions offer exercise in a heated pool which aim to improve strength, range of motion, cardiovascular fitness, balance and co-ordination as well as provide pain relief

Duration of the Program

The Orthopaedic Rehabilitation Day Program consists of at least three sessions of 30-60 minutes duration for each session.

Through therapy, exercise and education, our allied health professionals and rehabilitation specialists aim to improve movement and strength, which have usually decreased following surgery. This therapy aims to restore independence and well-being.

  • Bring your swimmers if you are scheduled for hydrotherapy, towels are provided

Designed for any person with a chronic lung condition, who is experiencing difficulty breathing or who finds that the activities they participate in every day are getting harder to complete.

The program includes:

  • Exercise Physiology
  • Hydrotherapy sessions
  • Physiotherapy.

Designed for patients who are experiencing a decline in their normal level of function or balance.

This may be due to prolonged hospital admission, general surgery, medical illness or chronic conditions.

The program includes:

  • Exercise Physiology
  • Hydrotherapy sessions
  • Physiotherapy.


About the Lymphoedema Early Intervention and Management Clinic

The Lymphoedema Early Intervention and Management Program is designed to provide evidence-based rehabilitation services to patients who have been diagnosed with lymphoedema and those identified as being at ‘high risk’ of developing the condition, who are living in the community. The program is conducted by an Occupational Therapist with postgraduate training in the management of lymphoedema.

Structure of the Program

The Lymphoedema program involves complex physical therapy and may include the following:

  • Lymphatic massage to manually drain the lymphatic system
  • Bandaging using graduated pressure, which ensures the maintenance of reduction in size of the limb
  • Training for patients and their family so that self-management is possible
  • The prescription and fitting of a pressure garment when the limb has reduced to near normal size
  • Advice about home programs of daily massage and exercise to ensure maintenance of results
  • An occupational therapy assessment and advice in use of your affected limb in everyday activities if required
  • Counselling and dietary services if required (available on site – additional fees apply).

This Program may include

  • Assessment of the patient with lymphoedema
  • Education on application and removal of compression garments
  • Education to assist the understanding and management of the condition
  • Individualised home programs
  • Measurement and fitting of compression garments
  • Relaxation techniques
  • Reviews and ongoing support

Duration of the Program

The Lymphoedema Early Intervention and Management Clinic runs on various days of the week. Please call our friendly team to confirm days and make an appointment.

Our Team

The sessions are conducted by an Occupational Therapist who has completed the Level One Lymphoedema Course in accordance with the Australasian Lymphology Association (ALA) in a private treatment room at The Hills Private Hospital.

Your goals may include

  • Reduction in lymphatic swelling
  • Education on the management of your lymphoedema
  • Prescription and fitting of pressure garment/s

Fee Structure

The program is structured as an ‘outpatient’ session. Therefore patients may be eligible to claim a portion of the fee back from their health fund (this is dependent on your level of cover with your health fund provider). Please contact Day Program staff for current service fees. Sessions are between half and one hour per visit, depending on patient requirements. This will be determined by the therapist during the initial consultation. The treating therapist may also recommend alternative therapies to complement lymphoedema treatment being undertaken, such as hydrotherapy. A number of these services can also be accessed through The Hills Private Hospital. Please speak to the therapist about additional treatments that may aid your recovery.

Access to day programs

Access to any of the rehabilitation day prgorams are available via referral. Your local GP, physician or surgeon will be able to assist you to obtain a referral to a private specialist at the hospital and who can organise your admission or enrolment into a program.

During your stay you will be under the direct care of this private specialist who will from time to time be assisted by other accredited private specialists and hospital staff.

The Hills Private Hospital can assist with organising community transport for pick up and or drop off for day programs.

The length of your program and type of therapies you will be undertaking will be determined at this consultation and from your initial assessment during your first therapy session.

Most programs consist of at least three sessions that are 30-45 minutes duration for each session.

Physiotherapy sessions involve strengthening, stretching, mobility training, functional excercises and manual therapy as required.

Excercises Physiology sessions involve strengthening, stretching, cardiovascular fitness, core stability training and balance excercises.

Tai Chi sessions involve gentle breathing excercises, stretches, slow movements, balanve and coordination training.

Hydrotherapy sessions involve performing excercises in a heated pool environment which aims to improve strength, range of motion, cardiovascular fitness, balance and coordination as well as provide pain relief.

Education sessions are conducted by different members of the multi-disciplinary team on relevant topics.

If required, other therapies can be included as part of the day program including:

  • Dietetics
  • Occupational therapy
  • Psychotherapy
  • Speech pathology.
